Three bases

Muscat holds most of Oman. Salalah and Khasab hold the parts it cannot.

Nearly every tour in the country leaves the capital, so that is where a first trip sits. The far south runs on its own monsoon and needs a flight; the fjords in the north are a separate country in everything but the passport.

What you will pay

What a day out in Oman actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. The wadi days come in lower than most people expect; the private four-wheel-drive runs are where the money goes.

Under $60

Fort entries, city half-days, the Khasab dhow and the short runs along the coast road.

$60–150

The full-day standards: Wadi Shab, the Daymaniyat boat, Nizwa, and the dunes east of Muscat.

$150 and up

Private four-wheel-drive days, Jebel Shams overnights and the Empty Quarter expeditions.

Only here

Three things that happen in Oman and nowhere near it.

The Gulf has no shortage of desert or coastline. A gorge you swim to the end of, a monsoon that turns one province green, and a fjord coast at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz belong to Oman alone.

A gorge you swim

Wadi Shab

The car park is the easy part. A boatman takes you the thirty metres across the inlet, then the path runs about an hour over boulders and past irrigation channels before the water gets deep enough to matter. The last chamber is reached through a gap in the rock barely wider than your shoulders, and there is a waterfall inside it.

The khareef

Green Dhofar

From late June to early September the Indian Ocean monsoon catches the Dhofar mountains and turns them green, which happens nowhere else on the Arabian peninsula. Waterfalls run at Wadi Darbat, camels stand around in the fog on the jebel, and Omani families fly south for it. That window books out early; the rest of the year Salalah is beaches and frankincense.

Musandam

The fjord coast

Musandam is cut off from the rest of Oman by the Emirates and reached by air, by road through Ras al Khaimah, or by fast ferry. The coast folds into steep inlets everyone calls fjords, and the traffic is wooden dhows and dolphins. Khasab is the base, and half a day on that water costs less than a city tour in the capital.

Fix these before you land

Four Omani bookings that will not wait for you.

Most of this country can be arranged over breakfast. These four run on nesting seasons, reserve permits, vehicle limits and a monsoon that fills every bed in Dhofar for ten weeks.

  1. 01Daymaniyat Island Snorkeling with Turtles TourThe nesting beach is a reserve and the number of people walked onto it at each nesting time is capped. Evening slots go first.
  2. 02Daymaniyat Island: Snorkelling Tour with Tasty LunchThe islands are a nature reserve on a permit system, and the boats stay in when the sea gets up. Fix a date, then keep a spare one.
  3. 03Nizwa Fort-Nizwa Souq-Misfah Al Arbyeen-Jebel Shams – Private Full Day TourThe rim road needs four-wheel drive and operators run a fixed number of vehicles a day. In winter the top of it sits close to freezing.
  4. 04Sunset Desert Safari Salalah Tour in Rub Al Khali – Empty QuarterThese run out of Salalah with an overnight camp, and the camps are small. The monsoon weeks fill them months ahead.
Oman in summer

From May the coast is brutal and the south turns green.

Muscat runs past forty-five degrees from May to September and the wadis empty out by mid-morning. There are two answers. Start at first light and be under a roof by eleven, or fly south to Salalah, where the same months arrive as monsoon cloud and running waterfalls.

Off the Muscat coast

The reef an hour off Muscat, dolphins at dawn, a dhow at sunset.

The Daymaniyat Islands are a protected reef out past Seeb and the best snorkelling in the country. Closer in, the dolphin boats leave the marina early, and the wooden dhows work the Mutrah corniche as the light goes.
